Down with Disease

First off, Happy Birthday to my wifey! Honey, you're the best, and I hope your day is as wonderful as can be. I love you!

Now on to other things. So last night, I once again had a fever. That's twice in a week. Here's the standing theory as to how that went down. I came down with a mildish stomach flu last week on Monday. I started feeling like crap while I was brewing over at Ryan's place. That night I had a fever. I went to work last Tuesday, but was feeling very crappy when I got home that night. In the middle of the night, I puked a couple of times and proceeded to stay home from work for the next day and a half.

Gwen then got sent home sick with a fever, but she didn't have any of the upset stomach action that I did. She bounced back very quickly.

I think that Gwen had something other than what I had, and that last night I caught whatever Gwen had. I feel much better today. Nothing that's too big a deal. I think that Rhyno also mentioned feeling crappy when we saw him on Sunday. Perhaps he had the same mumbo jumbo. I think that it goes away quickly. Woot for NOT having Swine Flu. (Yet)

Other than that, not much is going on. We did some remodeling in the basement, which now looks much better than it did before thanks to wall paneling and floor tiles. We also dropped the price on the house yet again, and it's depressingly listed for less than it was listed for when we bought it. That's not how it's supposed to happen. Of course, that's how it's happening, everywhere. Stupid second great depression, I hate you so much.

Tonight Kerry and I going to dinner at Claddagh Irish Pub in Maple Grove, to celebrate her birthday. She'll have to shy away from the Guinness due to extreme knocked-uppedness, but I don't have to be shy at all. Woot.

What a headache

So when I was about 14 or 15, I used to get migraine headaches. Really nasty migraine headaches with auras that would knock me out of commission for a long time. I hadn't had one in about 17 years...until this Tuesday evening. Sheesh.

I'm sure that there was some sort of perfect storm of stress, fatigue, and other factors that combined together to smack me in the face. Or forehead, actuall. I was alone with Gwen that night, and she was being a difficult toddler for a while but an angel for the most part. I sat down on the couch and started reading a novel in kind of low light without my glasses on, and my mom called me and told me that my 90-year-old grandfather had had another mini-stroke.

Almost instantly after getting off the phone with her, my vision started to blur in my right eye. The blurring became a strobe-like flicker as Kerry came in, and pretty soon I lost the ability to form words correctly. I would say something, and something different would come out of my mouth.

The speech disturbance lasted about 10 minutes, and then the headache started in earnest. It's pretty much gone now (two days later) but I'm still feeling kind of wonky. So I went to the doctor yesterday. They confirmed that it was indeed a migraine headache, and that nothing further needs to be done at this time. So that's good. It's kind of a scary situation when migraine symptoms mirror those of a stroke.

Speaking of headaches, the second annual Jabbergathering took place this past weekend, and was awesome. Because of this awesomeness, I had a much differenty type of headache all day Saturday.

Another huge headache is this effing house. It's nice to hear all of the optimism from everyone everywhere, telling me, "Chin up, buckaroo! It will sell!" The only problem with the optimism is that the @#$%^ thing still hasn't sold. I can't convey how frustrating it is to spend four years of your life preparing for a large life change, only to have all of your hopes and plans completely fouled up by a stupid house that won't sell. I'm not supposed to be here anymore.

Sick

Yep, it's the day after a day off, and I'm sick.  Staying home from work today.  Actually, my child and wife are both also sick.  Before anyone starts shunning us based on a swine flu scare, let me assure you that our symptoms don't necessarily fit into that category.  Gwen has had some mad diarrhea for the last several days, but seems to be getting better.  I've got a rather traditional "every muscle in my body aches" type thing going on, complete with a fever (albeit a low one).  Kerry is puking, but then again...it's morning.

Did I mention that Kerry is pregnant?  That's right folks!  I'm gonna be a daddy again!  The baby is due in early December, which means that if it's early like Gwen was, it'll probably be born in November.  We'll see.  Either way, it's gonna be a Benson Baby!  Not sure if that's where it will be born, but that's where it will live.

Graduation was surreal, and it passed in a blur.  I have no idea about anything that the speakers said, because I seriously could not pay attention.  It was 2 1/2 hours that felt like 10 minutes.  I now have a J.D.  Woot!

Work really sucks these days, and I have a feeling that people are going to be on my case for missing today.  My boss left work sick on Friday with a freakin' skip in her step and a smile on her face, though, so whatever.

Last week was rather hellish, with my ridiculous schedule.  Not sure if I mentioned it already, but I went to work at 7:00 am, stayed for one hour, took off for BarBri in St. Paul from 9:00 to 3:00 pm, and then drove back to work from 3:30 to 5:45.  That constitutes working a half day.  Not fun.

This weekend we went to the parents' lake cabin, and we had a good time...mostly.  I have three very obnoxious cousins that suck a lot of time and energy out of my parents, so it's hard to really spend any time with them while said cousins (ages 3, 5, and 8) are there.  Luckily we had arrived fairly early on Friday night, and they didn't get there until Saturday afternoon.

While I was at Target the other day, I scored the Karate Kid trilogy for $13.  That was a deal I couldn't pass on.  The third movie sucks liquid monkey butt, but the other two are icons of my youth.  I watched the first last night.  It was fun.

This week (aside from today) the schedule has returned to something resembling normal.  I'll be going to bar review during the nights and gettin' hassled by the man during the day.

Spreading the Disease!

So it’s been a while since I’ve written. Sheesh. Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve felt up to it. What a crazy week it’s been. Let’s see if I can remember it all….

I finished my last final on Saturday, May 10th. It felt good all around. I wrote a solid exam, finished nicely early, and headed home with joyful thoughts of summer in my head. After arriving home, the girls and I promptly left for my Grandparents’ house. It was Mother’s Day weekend, and we wanted to make sure that my mom and grandma could see the Gwenner.

I started feeling a sore throat when we got home that night, but it wasn’t that big a deal. We cracked open a very nice Bordeaux that my parents had brought us from Paris, and watched House while drinking wine. It was pretty much a perfect evening.

The next morning was Mother’s Day, and Gwenster and I let Kerry sleep in. She got a nice break that day, and I hung out with the Punk. We went out for dinner that evening, and had a great day, but Gwen was starting to get really cranky, and had some kinda goopy looking earwax. Didn’t think too much of it at the time…

And then on Monday she got kicked out of daycare with a temperature of 103. Luckily for me it was the afternoon, so I only missed an hour of work. I came home with her, and started feeling pretty lousy myself. I checked my temp that evening and I was sitting at 101.5. Sweet. We took Gwen to Urgent Care that evening. It turned out that she had an ear infection in both ears, and one had ruptured. Poor thing.

Kerry was off work on Tuesday, as she usually is. So she stayed home with the bambino and I went to work like a schlep. I was home by noon, and slept on the couch for 3 hours. I felt like total crud.

Wednesday night the madness continued. Gwen had developed some blisters on her hands and mouth. We knew that there was at least one confirmed instance of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease at daycare, and a trip to the doctor on Thursday proved it for Gwen as well. So, I was home with her one more time. To top it off, Kerry had come down with a fever on Wednesday night. So she was home in bed on Thursday, feeling like total crud.

Kerry felt slightly better on Friday, and Gwen was able to go back to daycare that afternoon. Gwen got progressively better all weekend, but Kerry’s sore throat kept hanging on. She finally went to the doctor today to get it checked out. Thankfully, it wasn’t strep.

It was freaking Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. Seriously?!? The chances of that in someone over the age of 5 are really slim, but she managed to get it. Poor Kerry. With adults it’s really just a fever followed by a sore throat…no blisters on the hands or feet. So thank heaven for small miracles there. So yeah, this past week was like some sort of crazy run of diseases. Not cool. Hopefully we can be healthy for a while now. Kerry’s doctor prescribed some “Magic Mouthwash” which sounds like something with a street value, but really is just kind of numbing or something.

Quick Recap

Wowzers, it’s been a while. Let’s see here. I’ll start with the weekend.

Kerry, Gwen and I left town on Thursday night last week for another mini-vacation. Our first stop was my parents’ place. We arrived around 8:30 that evening and hung out with my parents for a while before putting Gwenner to bed. Unfortunately, she didn’t keep sleeping very long. She was awake and VOMITING within a couple of hours. The poor lil’ girl threw up 10 times in the next 2 ½ hours. After that she was able to sleep for the rest of the night.

The next day she seemed to be feeling much better, so we took off for our hotel in Alexandria. We had a great time in the pool (possible pictures later) and then we went out to dinner with my parents. After we put the girl to bed she puked again. She had overdone it. Poor thing. There was only one occurrence that evening, though, and she was able to sleep after that. Thankfully, so were we.

I went to see NOFX on Sunday night, which freaking ruled. It was a badass time, and Ryan, Reuben, Ramsay, and CJ were all there rocking with me. Unfortunately, I got a text message from Kerry that night, stating that she had come down with the Punkin’s stomach flu.

I got it at 4:45 am the next morning.

Ugh.

But, I’m better now. Yay!

Fever Dreams

So last night was fun.  I went to bed at about 8:45 PM after a healthy dose of NyQuil.  I woke up again at about 3:00 AM, too nauseous to take another dose of medicine.  Then the fever dreams started.  I dreamed that the English language had stopped working.  I would try to say something, and all that would come out was garbled nonsense and dolphin-like clicking noises.  As silly as this sounds by day, I assure you that in the middle of the night it was more than a tad disturbing.  It wasn't just me that was emitting crazy noises.  The whole room was (according to my addled brain) filled with people, all of whom could no longer speak English.  It was a veritable chorus of dolphin clicks.

The dreams got really weird when all of the crazy words and clicks formed themselves into flowcharts.  I don't think I have the ability to adequately explain this, but it was really weird.

I called in sick to work today, and am hoping to rally for Clutch.  Besides all of the aches and whatnot, I actually am starting to feel pretty good right now, if only because I can finally breathe through both nostrils.

The Sickness

Being sick sucks. I have a fever, plugged nose, headache, sore throat, etc…and I’m at work. Why? Because my daughter was sick last week, and if I were to take a sick day I would get another “occurrence”, which is a heaping mound of dung that I don’t want to have to scrape off my shoe. (I honestly wonder how many fecal metaphors I could come up with that involve work. That’s a task for another day, though.) So here I am, plugging away at work.

Thankfully, I really don’t feel too bad. I’m perfectly able to stay at work and function well. Of course, I’ll end up infecting all of my coworkers, which is really just testament to why their system is stupid. Enjoy your cold, suckas! It’ll come for you soon enough.

I’m really hoping that my wife doesn’t come down with this. She’s got a more delicate constitution when it comes to being sick (no offense, honey…). I hope she drinks her OJ, because I don’t want her to miss CLUTCH tomorrow night. Actually, I don’t think that anything’s really gonna keep her away. She could break her leg and lose an arm and she’d still be there. She’s got a bit of a thing for Neil Fallon, I suspect. I’m trying to compensate by wearing a beard.

This weekend the wife and I are gettin’ the heck out of dodge and leaving the Gwenner in the care of my mother. It’s officially the start of my spring break on Saturday at approximately noon, so…w00t. We can’t really do the whole Cancun thing these days, so mini-vacations are the way to go. This is yet another reason that I hope that Kerry doesn’t get sick. Drink your OJ, honey. Vitamin C is good for you.

I’ve been enjoying my Trappist and Scottish 80/- ales very much. The Trappist tastes darn near exactly like it’s supposed to, which makes me exceedingly happy. The Scottish does too, from what I’ve read, but it’s interesting to say the least. There’s a kind of burnt taste involved with it that I didn’t like at first. Now I love it. It’s described as a “hint of peat” by some…uh…describers. Quite good, though.

I’m super excited to see all manner of friends at First Ave tomorrow night. A good time will be had. Until then, it’s back to poppin’ Ricola like mad and waiting for my Tylenol Sinus to kick in.
